They had switched to 5 lines staff (pentagramma) the century before... but Kane has no musical sense, in fact the only thing he cannot do is: sing. The fact he is mentioning the tetragramma means... he probably only heard a schola cantorum or church songs (gregoriano and ambrosiano) and doesn't really like them.

I could not find an English word for it and I am still researching it - apparently I could have left it in Italian too... since all the music lingo is in Italian: cantabile, allegro, lento, moderato poco mosso, etc etc... (so I guess I'll switch to Italian and then blog about this too) XDDD

I left the "Mamma mia moment" very Italian! Let's make it crystal clear this guy is Italian LOL... in the Italian version of the comic he uses a Sicilian thing: Maria Santissima! (I was going to write in Sicilian but then nobody would understand LOLz)

Ehi Supervillain did you see the Foxy contest? :D

Eli... it's not only the ABBA song... Americans are veeeeery familiar with Mamma mia, it's the first thing they tell you when you say you are Italian: mamma mia! (and they shake the hands too XDDD so cute!)

I went to search too. NYP library is pretty cool! :Q___ So apparently wikipedia has tetragramma in Italian too for the 4 lines staff.

Me too i was confused at first, that is, I always knew that pentagram is for the star (il pentacolo - film students write about witches quite often) but was not sure about the tetragram.

Anyways... he is Italian, let's leave it in Italian - it will also give me the chance to write an afterword for this slice of chapter! XDDD

Go Supervillain goooo! XDD Everytime you draw something you grab some fans! MUAHAHAH (so disinterested LOLz - that's the pirate in me).

Eli... I am also waiting for more of your ruffles and skulls XD

I can't remember if they had already switched from four lines to five lines for writing notes by the time of the story but... tetragram? Are you sure ^_^;;

From what I've gathered you mean the 'four-lines (or five-lines) staff' on music sheet(s) here, if not just the music sheet.

Talia looks quite seductive at the end ;D, yep *pets panel* .

P.S.: I guess you left 'mamma mia' in Italian on purpose.
Between the ABBA's song and the related Meryl Streep movie it shouldn't sound too odd to English speakers ^^.

I most certainly did ^_______^ (I never miss a bit of news ;])
actually I was thinking about it the other day... just haven't got around to drawing much lately >,<" busy busy busy....
but of course, I will enter *U* can't miss the chance to dress up Fox!!! <3 (or dress him less lol /perv *Q*)
shall also be working on Kane's face too when I get the chance hahaha XD

@Deda: I've browsed and googled some more and stumbled on a couple tetragramma pics labelled as 'tetragram', but every other reference I've encountered so far (included my hardcopy Oxford Dictionary ) gives me only the 'four-line staff' as the correct translation in a musical context.
Tetragram and tetragrammaton in English are used in linguistic and biblical fields respectively. In any case, localized spelling only, no tetragramma.
For pentagramma the situation is slightly better: pentagram (again, no pentagramma direct loan) *can* be used for music, but its main meaning is the equivalent of our 'pentacolo'. <--- Well, if you ever wished to steer into magical!pirates territory... XD

Aah, nice bit of backstory for Kane tied to the word :D. And finally a teeny tiny flaw for the supah pirate :D. Guess he won't be serenading Talia unless he's in a 'truth or dare' situation , or Talia begs him via smooches to test his level of affection ;D.
Hmmm... now I wonder if pirates would play Spin The Bottle XD *plotbunny is smelling a carrot :D*

Also, thanks for the funny bit of info on the 'mamma mia' XDDD.

@Elianthos I was thinking more of "Seven Minutes in Heaven..."

I also really like Kane's facepalm in the second panel...

She could hardly make the excuses Pippi Longstocking made to get out of it ("Sorry, Fridolf, I can't study anymore, I'm needed in the crow's nest)...
