and most of the times... for majority of the population... there was neither one of them. They were poor and bound to live and die in just one, miserable way... trapped in the same day, the same spot for ever.

Life was really worth nothing. men died like flies and most of them were not considered more than cattle.

If you think about what Kane has is what we have today... comfort, food, a roof over his head and the freedom to choose.

Could have gone into a debate about what more there was to life, before that interruption...

Gold and Freedom... How rare it must have actually been to get both at once... oftentimes, it had to be either one or the other... the ones who had the gold were often the ones who most wanted to own you... and even those without were bound by need, and those who were in the middle were bound by duty, expectations, and other things...
Would love have had any value without either of those?
